Women With Voices: A Brown Girl’s Perspective was created to empower women of color through workshops, blogs, and our online store. In that same spirit, this post is a reminder that mental health is health — and that self-care is not selfish. It’s a strategy for staying grounded while we support the next generation.
Why mental health matters right now
Many of us are carrying a lot: work, family, community responsibilities, and the pressure to ‘keep it together.’ Add social media, world events, and economic stress — and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Naming what we feel is the first step toward healing.
Self-care that actually helps
Start small: 10 minutes of quiet, prayer/meditation, or journaling.
Move your body: a walk, stretching, dancing — anything that releases stress.
Protect your peace: set boundaries with people, news, and social media.
Get support: therapy, coaching, faith leaders, or trusted friends — you don’t have to do it alone.
Understanding young people in today’s society
Young people are growing up in a world that’s faster, louder, and more public than what many of us experienced. They’re navigating identity, expectations, and constant comparison. Instead of leading with judgment, we can lead with curiosity: What are they carrying? What do they need? What’s one way we can make them feel safe and seen?
Connection before correction.
A simple weekly reset
Check in: What emotion has been showing up the most this week?
Choose one boundary: What will you say ‘no’ to this week?
Choose one support: Who will you reach out to (or what will you schedule)?
If this resonated, share it with a sister-friend, a parent, an educator, or anyone who needs encouragement. And if you’d like more resources, explore our blog and workshops — we’re building together.
